Assessment is a key task of all educators and learners. The traditional form of assessment in a math class, a quiz given each day and a unit test given every few weeks, is inadequate to meet the needs of learners.
Assessment can be broken into two forms, summative and formative assessment. Formative assessment is intended to guide the learner and give them feedback on their learning. Summative assessment is intended to measure the learning that has happened so far. A useful analogy is to think of formative assessment as the feedback players get, both from practicing skills, and from their coaches in preparation for a game. The summative assessment happens during the game itself.
